Approach / Inspiration

My paintings are nature driven and vary in subject matter and medium. Some paintings were started decades ago. Spawned from a collection of snippets and found objects (photos of every angle, rough sketches, research notes etc.) sparked ideas that formed my ‘bucket list’ of paintings. These waited patiently for realization. However, and fortunately, I now find myself at a place in my career and life where I can divert my focus from retail sales to that of tackling that ‘bucket list’.

I have been blessed to study the things that interest me most. Exploring the nature of nature during the artistic creative process is truly a fulfilling experience. My sincere hope is to capture and render that which is too often not noticed or appreciated.

Growing up on a farm I had the amazing experience of living up close and personal with many creatures (wild and domesticated) that inhabit a “Mixed Farm”. My parents (at times) thought maybe they were a little too close and personal, as many of them would join us at the supper table.

From a young age I would attempt to capture life on the farm with paper and pencil. My father encouraged my early artistic endeavours and patiently pointed out the importance of studying the anatomy carefully before attempting to represent it graphically. My wonderful mother opened my eyes to look deeper into the mysteries of nature. She generously shared her wild-crafting knowledge acquired from her ancient European cultural heritage.

From a very early age, I can clearly remember becoming enchanted by my mother using common field flowers (chamomile) to perform healing magic on my ailing (at the time I thought was dying) baby sister. From that point in my life onward; plants and trees became interesting individuals with special powers and unique personalities.

The knowledge of and reverence for nature that my parents shared with me has been a continual source of sustenance and has also provided me with abundant personal fulfillment. For those gifts, I am truly grateful.
